Finally Organized!

Finally Organized! Grade 3 Ms. Cosentino and Ms. Howie

We are hoping that all of you will become members of our class blog so that you can see what we are doing in our Grade 3 class!

Math

2D geometry is an important topic in our class right now! We are learning the names of many shapes and we are learning how to identify these shapes by their characteristics.

That means how many sides and vertices (corners). We also look at the kind of angles a shape has and we compare them to a right angle. It can be a right angle (use a corner piece of paper to see if it is a square angle) or it can be greater or less than a right angle. Some of us need a bit more practice spotting angles when they are inside a shape!

A new idea we are learning is what parallel lines are! We know that parallel lines NEVER meet or intersect but they too can be tricky to find inside a shape. They come in pairs.

Then finally it is important that we know if there are any equal sides in a shape. Once we have learned 2D shapes we will go on to 3D shapes. Our teachers say it is a good idea for us to find these shapes in the real world, not just a Math activity!

We don't need to know the names of the triangles but we should be able to see what kind of angles are in them!

A sample of 2 interactive games to play.

A handy list to help learn the names:
tri >>> 3             quad >>> 4       penta >>> 5      hex >>> 6       octa >>> 8            deca >>>10

We have become Artists!

We had a visit from a real artist named Katerina Mertikas. She was amazed at our work on reflections and then we worked on a painting on a real canvas with her!

A Winter Village: We used pastel colours and outlined the shapes in black. We noticed some of the 2D shapes we learned are in real life and art!

Today we began Cardinals in Winter. While we painted we listened to music by Vivaldi (4 Seasons: Winter) and a symphony by Mozart. These will be bright colours, not pastels. And the shapes will have more curved lines than straight lines.

Kindness Corner:

Juliette noticed someone was upset because the painting had some drops of black fall on it. She fixed it for her classmate and reassured her friend that it would be just fine. And it was! We really believe that our class is a community where we help and take of each other.
